Sometimes the most memorable travel experiences come from the most unexpected places. Jaén, a charming Andalusian city nestled in olive grove country, wasn’t originally on our Spain itinerary. We discovered it because it was one of the few places still hosting traditional bullfights. Which also bought us to the Festival of St. Lucas and let us experienced authentic Spanish culture.
Why Jaén?
Our decision to visit Jaén was entirely practical – it was the only place we could find that still had a bullfight scheduled during our visit in October. Two members of our group were particularly interested in experiencing this traditional Spanish spectacle. So we adjusted our itinerary to make it happen.
What started as a simple detour to check an item off our cultural bucket list turned into one of the most authentic and joyful experiences of our entire Spain trip.
Festival of St. Lucas: An Unexpected Celebration
Pure serendipity led us to arrive during the Festival of St. Lucas, a vibrant local celebration that transformed the entire city into one big, joyous party. This wasn’t a tourist-focused event – this was genuine Spanish community celebration at its finest.

The bullfight proved to be exactly what our group members had hoped to experience – a traditional Spanish spectacle that’s become increasingly rare in modern Spain. While bullfighting remains controversial, experiencing it in an authentic local setting provided cultural context.
While the two members attended the bullfight while the rest of us continued exploring the festival and the charming streets of Jaén. Both experiences provided authentic cultural immersion in different ways.

What made our Jaén experience so special was its complete authenticity. This wasn’t Spain packaged for tourists – this was Spain living its own life, celebrating its own traditions, and welcoming strangers who happened to wander into the party.
The locals we met were genuinely curious about what had brought us to their city during their festival. Their warmth and enthusiasm for sharing their celebration with unexpected visitors exemplified Spanish hospitality at its finest.
